Why a Run Through London at Night is the Best Way to See the Famous Landmarks

You can probably tell from many of the other blogs on TheCounterintuitive.com, that I’m a big fan of health, fitness and running in particular. One of the things I missed the most when I was travelling, was my regular evening run through London. Simply put, London is most beautiful at night and the best way to see all the famous landmarks at the perfect time is with a run.
It’s an alternative way to see London in all its beauty, it’s free, it doesn’t matter the weather and it’s a bound to be a memorable experience.

Surviving the Tough Guy 2013 Challenge

One of my five reasons for coming back to London in January was for an event called Tough Guy. I explained why I thought it was a good idea to come back for it in one of my travel reflection posts.

Not much longer than a day in the country and I was on the M6 motorway driving up to Wolverhampton in the car with my buddy, reminiscing about the past years competition and how the weather might play a big part in this years event. You see, whilst on the surface Tough Guy is an event that looks very much like a physical challenge, only past competitors realise that it’s actually more of a mental challenge.

Barefoot Half Marathon

After getting a massive blister from basketball on Wednesday, I spent Thursday inside whilst the other students trained kung fu. The wound closure strips I thankfully packed in my first aid kit did their best to hold the leftover skin in place, keeping the wound from reopening but letting the open skin get enough air to heal. I felt it was hit and miss whether it would be ready in time for my Saturday run though – my shot at my running target before I left the school.
I figured the best way to swing the balance in favour of running was putting together a new running playlist. Music has always been the ultimate motivator for me to do anything. A combination of songs from Rocky I, Rocky IV, grimy hip hop and anything else that would make me run faster were thrown together in the playlist. In my mind, I was going to at least give it a shot. On Friday, I tested the foot out with a light jog and light kung fu training. It felt good enough to hold, so Saturday I attempted to run my half marathon. […]

A Costly Game of Basketball

By Wednesday lunch, a number of things had come together for me at the kung fu school.

Firstly, since the weekend, my kung fu teacher finished teaching me all the moves to the form I was working on. Having spoken to him on the previous Saturday, it was clear he understood my desire to learn as much as I could with my time there. It felt good to see that come together.

Secondly, after my realisation about the importance of ankle flexibility in my training, I spent most of my spare time before, in between and after training working my ankles and calf muscles. I managed to see some impact, because I can now officially do an asian squat. Whilst there’s a long way to go in maintaining a straight back for the purposes of kung fu stances, it shows some progress in the space of a few days of concentrated efforts.

To celebrate my achievements, I joined the rest of the students for a game of afternoon basketball. I hadn’t played basketball since school days and I was keen to test out the new and improved me.

My Realisation About A Dangerous Habit

Towards the middle of last week, I was feeling a bit disappointed with the school and the teachings. I felt frustrated by repeating the same stuff (even though I was fully prepared that this is likely to happen and didn’t want to admit it) and I felt time was being wasted in-between the tougher training sessions. Having a couple of sessions rained off and others that were shorter than normal didn’t help. I thought I’d try to consider why I was frustrated. I sat down and structured all my thoughts on paper, so I could go to the guys here and speak to them. By the end of trying to get my head round it, I realised I was making a far-reaching mistake.
The short version is that, I realised I was making excuses for my own lack of motivation and blaming others for it. I decided to arrange a new schedule going forwards.
